Eating blackberries is easy; but eating BlackBerry would be more challenging. That was the conclusion of one analyst commenting on the rumors this week that Microsoft might be thinking of buying BlackBerry-maker RIM. Barry Richards of Paradigm Capital in Toronto told The Canadian Press that, in view of RIM's colossal $50BN market cap, "We are running out of possible acquirors and we are now left with Cisco, Microsoft, IBM and maybe Nokia." RIM reported first-quarter revenue in June of more than $1BN for the first time ever, while net profits jumped 73% to $232.2M, making the Canadian high-tech company a very big mouthful for anyone else to swallow. RIM Wins "Unfettered Right" To Continue the BlackBerry Success Story, Pays NTP $450M

RIM and its customers yesterday won the "unfettered right" to continue in the BlackBerry-related wireless business when RIM and NTP, Inc. signed a binding term sheet that resolves all current litigation between them. RIM agreed to pay to NTP US$450 million in final and full settlement of all claims to date against RIM, as well as for a perpetual, fully-paid up license going forward. RIM announced plans to expand its support for Windows Mobile-based devices with a new software application suite that will enable devices from third-party manufacturers to benefit from the popular BlackBerry software applications and services.
